A great way to find out more about AR is to marshal at an event. This gives great insight into what's involved but be warned! marshalling is great fun too and there is a risk you may never actually get around to competing!

(don't just take our word for it read here to see what Mark Dunlop thought of it when he lost his team mate the day before an event and came along to marshal)

All the CCAR events would not exist without the help and support of the marshals who volunteer their time, energy and expertise to manage the organisation of the events and ensure fairness and safety for all teams.
We were very fortunate last year because we have managed to recruit professional, hardworking, enthusiastic, supportive and cheerful marshals and event photography. Many got involved to find out what the sport was all about or to support their other half who was taking part, some felt they wanted to put something back into the sport having previously been a competitor.

Volunteering for the Causeway Coast Adventure Races means you are signing up for hard work, some times long days and heaps of responsibility — but brilliant fun, working in a great environment with a really cool team spirit. The Causeway Coast Volunteers are the greatest heroes of the events and crucial in keeping our events on (and off!) the road.

This year we will require CCAR volunteers in the following roles:-

  • Course marshals and safety staff to keep the events running smoothly
  • Drivers who can transport equipment and other marshals
  • Experienced kayakers and first-aiders
  • Photographers

Volunteer Goody Bags

The Causeway Coast volunteers and marshals must be some of the most hard working folks you ever clapped eyes on. We'll make sure you're well rewarded. All Causeway Coast 2008 marshals will receive a goody bag jam packed with treats, including packed lunch, free entry to the Causeway Coast volunteers and marshals B.B.Q party, to be held mid summer 2008 with fun activity's that your race friends would get up to!, we'll also help towards fuel costs and what ever other treat's CCAR can get our hands on...!

Your Details

If you are interested in volunteering to be part of the Causeway Coast volunteers and marshals team, then please mailto:shirley@causewaycoastar.co.uk with the following details:

  • Name, address, email address, mobile number (or other contact telephone number)
  • Your skills (e.g. navigation ability; rope-skills; driving a van; driving with a trailer)
  • Relevant equipment you may be able to bring along (radios, your own kayak and equipment, your own mtb, etc.)
  • The dates and days you can help out (Fri/Sat/Sun?)
  • Any preferences for your roles. For instance, would you prefer to be dealing with Kit checks or out on the event course amongst the competitors? Remember that certain marshal spots may be remote and isolated, some may involve a special task, would you be comfortable loading/unloading heavy boxes, bikes, kayaks, etc.? Some volunteers are ideally suited to be that friendly face at the end of the competitors gruelling run to the middle of nowhere, while others are best suited to issuing instructions at special tasks, or may simply prefer helping out in the background. All roles are equally valuable. Read on to help you decide what suits you. (And it's also cool if you reckon your up for pretty much anything!)

Pre-event set-up & post event takedown

We need a folks who enjoy a spot of site construction. (marquees, tents, fencing, signage) Sometimes it can be intense, but we love you for it and you'll get a few extra perks if you can help out for the full weekend, you will be rewarded for your efforts!

Saturday and/or Sunday

Race Marshals: happy, patient, enthusiastic types to look after designated checkpoints, giving (or actively not giving!) information as briefed by the volunteer co-ordinator. This is a great job for superheroes. Competitors LOVE to see a marshal when they're tired and bewildered, but they tend to take them for granted at all other times (i.e. when focused on the racing). The reward is the knowledge that you're a key link in the chain to making the race run successfully. It would be helpful to have a basic fitness level — lots of standing, perhaps biking from one location to another....

Typical marshal activities will include

  • Helping to register competitors
  • Undertaking kit checks
  • Placing punches/Sportident boxes at checkpoints (and bringing them back in afterwards)
  • Briefing competitors on what they will be doing at certain checkpoints (secret tasks)
  • Making sure teams punch/dib in the punch/Sportident box when necessary
  • Helping to ensure that the teams abide by CCAR event rules
  • Updating CCAR HQ with info about the race and racers passing through
  • Looking after bikes and kayaks
  • Unloading/Loading kayaks
  • Cheering on and boosting morale
  • Event photography
  • Collecting any walking wounded
  • Possibly administering basic First Aid
  • Being visible and available to anyone who requires assistance or help
  • Clearing the checkpoint of any litter, lost property etc. after the race has passed through CCAR run a leave no trace policy

Food

We'll provide you with a packed lunch and we'll consider any dietary requests (i.e. vegetarian's, etc.)

Equipment & Clothing

Please prepare for all weathers. Be sure to bring plenty of warm clothes, waterproofs & sun cream, as well as a basic kit-list which will be recommended to you closer to the dates.

Further Information

Once you have registered with, CCAR we'll give you further information regarding roles, kit-list, accommodation, and timings. PLEASE let us know immediately if there is any reason or problem that might mean you can't make it at the weekend. After you sign up to helping CCAR will be depending on your vital support during the event and if you can't make it we need to know so that we can reallocate the marshal and volunteer roles and work.

If you've got this far, and you're typing up your email to volunteer, then well done, we look forward to having you on board. It'll be a blast.

Looking forward to having you on the CCAR Team, Shirley.
