2013 UK City of Culture

Dominating the Northwestern landscapes of Ireland, astride the flowing waters of the Foyle, is a 6th Century city that today resonates to the sounds of the 21st Century.

Among the happiest of those sounds is the multi-lingual chatter of more international visitors than ever - from conference delegates and backpackers to cruise passengers and tourists of all kinds - who are discovering the delights of a compact city which is unlike any other.

Londonderry is a centre of culture and creativity, and is now as famous for its confident modern outlook as it is for the timeless quality of its craic.

Meander through the bustling streets of the only completely Walled City in the British Isles and listen to the echoes of 1450 years of history. Stroll along its 17th century walls, and marvel at the ever-changing skyline of a city which is constant only in the warmth of its welcome.

Here you can expect many a smile of greeting from people who are noted worldwide for their friendly hospitality.

Gateway to Ireland's Northwest, our city is pulsing with life, resonant with centuries of heritage and passion, yet fresh as an Atlantic breeze. This is a joyful regional centre filled with celebration and inspiration, as manifested in the number and quality of our festivals and special events throughout the year. Energetic, outward looking and high-spirited, this is truly a city for all seasons.

Race Route

For now here's a few details about the event. First thing to stress is that no team should be out longer than 5hrs (if you are you'll start to loose points) so prep yourself for 5hrs of biking, running and kayaking and a healthy dose of fun.

  • Each team will have 5hrs to visit as many checkpoints as they can
  • The route will be points based, so each checkpoint will have points attached
  • The route will be split into 3 sections, A, B & C
  • Section A will have mandatory and optional checkpoints
  • Section B will have mandatory and optional checkpoints
  • Section C will be all optional checkpoints
  • Sections above may still change, this will be updtaed nearer the event
  • In order to rank you must visit all the mandatory checkpoints
  • The secret tasks will be back, ?? in total, these will be marked on your instruction sheet plus map/s and will all be optional, so if they don't float your boat you can miss them out, they will however carry more points to reward the fearless or fun loving teams.

Sportident Timing System

Many of you will of used this timing system before but some may not of used it, if you're not sure about it make sure you let us know when you arrive and we'll give you a quick demo, it's really simple to use so there's nothing to worry about.

The timing chips are expensive so if you loose yours you will have to pay for a replacement which depending on the type we use will cost between £30-£60.

At certain stages of the race you may also have to use the old orienteering punches, details of when you need to use these will be on your route instruction sheet which you will get before the start of the event.

We will attach your SI card to your wrist with a tevek strap at registration, you must not remove this yourself, we will remove it for you at download after you finish the race, if it's not still attached you will get a penalty of 100 points per card removed.

Finish

The finish will be back at the event HQ, once you finished you will need to make your way to the download point where you have to download and return your Sportident timing chip plus both of your race bibs. We are the only ones to remove your timing chip, teams who remove the timing chip will loose points.

Showers
Showers will be available after the event.

Post Race Food
We will have soup, sandwiches and the normal spread after the race, so join us for a bite to eat and a cup of tea.

Results
We'll announce the results ASAP after the last team crosses the finish line. Provisional LIVE results will be displayed in the hall so teams will be able to see what position they are lying in as the race unfolds.

FAQ's

Which shoes and tyres should I use?

A large part of the route will be on sealed surfaces but we will be taking advantage of as much off road as we can in the area. It's your call what type of tyre you use. Again the run section/s will be mixed although a trail shoe may the best option here.

Do I need to carry my running shoes during the bike sections?
No not at the moment, this may change.

Can you tell me more about the route?
More details to follow but in the meantime it may be useful to read the following Highway Code.

What's the weather like?
At this time of the year it's likely to be cold, check this link for Current Weather forecast, wrap up warm, bring extra layers and think about what you plan to wear, shorts might not be the best option.
